I’m not one for labels. I don’t like boxes or constrictions. But I’m now officially a “daddy blogger.”
When I started this little enterprise, I planned to blog about three topics: reading, writing and fatherhood. “Reading” and “writing” have been stricken from the masthead.
Here’s why:
- While I still read and write, my time to do both of these things is slightly reduced (ha) due to the boy. This is not a complaint, just an observation. I’m not sure I’m doing enough of either to come up with post ideas. Writing them felt like a chore.
- My readers — all twelve of you glorious people — respond more to the stuff about Jack.
- Focus will make this a better blog and me a better writer. Thanks to my friend Ali for pointing out that I already knew what that focus should be.
- Jack is over a year old. The moratorium on exploitation is over.
There are other changes to come, including a blog roll (I’ve “met” some really cool parents online) and some new functions. I’m also mulling a Facebook fan page because, frankly, the world is spending all their waking hours there and I want to make it easy for the twelve of you to keep reading.
Other changes you’d like to see or topics you want me to talk about? Let me know.

Writing about Jack's reading progress would be cool too – the progression from nursery rhymes and storytelling to board books to picture books to Dr. Seuss to the Choose Your Own Adventures (I probably missed a step there).
How do you choose what literature you expose your kids to? I had no idea what my mom did for me growing up by introducing me to things like D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths as early as my Mother Goose nursery rhymes book until themes of the myths would slip into some of my junior high lit classes and I felt like I was ahead of the game unknowingly.
I still vote that “Alan Reviews Children's Lit” could be a good sub section and wickedly humorous.
This excites me.

Thanks for the suggestion, Ali. And timely to the point where I worry you're in my head a little. Jack has become attached to his first book. Exciting and repetitive, all wrapped up in one big reading burrito. Post to come.

Dear Daddy Blogger–As one of the glorious twelve I have to say I love the way you write.
If you wanna' change things up a bit, perhaps a blog entry on your very exceptional baby-sitter!

I am still working on inventing a 34 hour day because 7 more hours would really help.
